Strapping is used to secure bundles of the same product for shipping and storage. Strapping items correctly will keep the items reinforced and is essential to shipping items securely in the packaging industry. Correct strapping will also extend the life of the product by keeping it secure. It also frees up space by keeping similar materials in neat bundles.

Steel is one of the oldest and most tensile of strapping materials. Available in a variety of widths and thicknesses, galvanized steel with the strongest grade is ideal for heavy duty reinforcing because of its durability. Galvanized steel owes its strength and durability to a process known as galvanization. Steel is coated in a molten bath of zinc which alters its properties, transforming it into a dull, grey material that is resistant to corrosion. Galvanized steel is used widely in applications where rust resistance is needed and is ideal for shipping and securing products.

The highest quality steel is produced by steel strapping companies that pay attention to source, development and quality. Some steel strapping manufacturers purchase prime steel from mills that meet rigid specifications. These steel manufacturers monitor every step of production, including the galvanization process.


Furthermore, steel strapping comes in two general grades: Regular Duty (RD) or High Tensile (HT). Regular duty is low carbon steel strapping that is suitable for low to medium duty strapping applications. It is ideal for package reinforcement, bundling and box closure. On the other hand, High Tensile (HT) is high carbon steel strapping that is heat treated to become highly tensile (able to withstand much stretching without breaking) and for optimum shock resistance. It is ideal for securing compressed fiber bales, securing heavy steel coils and other heavy-duty products. It is often utilized in the freight and transportations industry.

Steel strapping is applied with a steel strapping tool. To properly strap a package, it must be set down in a level floor. Working on an uneven surface may cause the steel strap to slip, potentially causing injury. A worker must make sure there is enough space to move around freely while strapping the package.

Also, the steel strap tool must be adjusted to the correct size for strapping. The right setting will make the process simpler. The strap also needs to be placed on the right area of the packaging to prevent damage.
